Why I Chose FrontM - A Note to Self

Today is my first day at FrontM as its Chief Commercial Officer and a perfect day to reflect and move forward.

Why FrontM?

After three decades in shipping spanning commercial dry bulk, digital transformation, and maritime leadership, I've chosen to join FrontM because this is where the maritime industry's most critical challenge meets its most promising solution.

The Perfect Convergence

The Human Element Crisis: For years, I've witnessed firsthand the maritime industry's struggle with crew retention, welfare, and the growing disconnect between ship and shore. The industry desperately needs to attract the next generation of seafarers, but we've been trying to compete with dated tools. FrontM directly addresses this - it's not just about technology, it's about human sustainability.

Digital Transformation, Done Right: My time at Klaveness Dry Bulk leading digital transformation taught me that technology alone isn't the answer - it's about creating platforms that genuinely improve people's lives and work. FrontM's superapp platform is exactly this: a horizontal solution that breaks down silos and connects the fragmented maritime digital landscape. After years of advocating for such integration, I'm now positioned to help build it.

The Market Timing: The maritime digital industry is projected to reach $345 billion by 2030. New-gen LEO satellite connectivity is becoming mainstream. The regulatory push for ESG and decarbonization is intensifying. FrontM sits at the intersection of all these forces - positioned not just to ride the wave, but to shape it.

Partnership-Centric Model: FrontM's approach of building an app marketplace and ecosystem rather than trying to own every vertical resonates deeply with my collaborative philosophy. This is how real transformation happens - through partnerships, not competition.

Strategic Alignment

Motion Ventures Connection: As an angel investor and advisor with Motion Ventures (which invested in FrontM), I've already been part of evaluating and supporting this vision. Now I can drive it from the inside.

Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers Leadership: My role as President & Fellow gives me unique access to the commercial shipping community - the exact audience FrontM needs to reach and serve.

Geopolitical & Trade Expertise: My teaching and podcast work on geopolitics and supply chain gives me insight into macro trends that will shape maritime digitalization adoption patterns.

Netbulk . Board Position: Direct exposure to shipowner decision-making processes and pain points.

How I Need to Execute This Role?

Phase 1: Deep Immersion into the solution & team

Phase 2: Strategic Commercial Framework

Phase 3: Commercial Excellence

Phase 4: Scale & Leadership

Critical Success Factors

1. Stay Close to Customers. This isn't a sell-and-forget business. Maritime is conservative. Trust is everything. I need to be visible, accessible, and obsessed with customer outcomes.

2. Balance Vision with Pragmatism. The vision is transformative, but we need wins today. Land major accounts, demonstrate ROI, build momentum.

3. Leverage My Unique Position. I need to play to my strengths. I'm not just a commercial officer - I'm a maritime industry leader with deep credibility. Use it wisely, authentically, strategically.

4. Enable the Ecosystem. FrontM wins when partners win. This is about orchestrating a movement, not controlling a product.

5. Remember the "Why". This is ultimately about the 2 million seafarers who spend months away from home, often in isolation, doing work that moves 90% of world trade. Every commercial decision should honor their humanity.

6. Bridge the Ship-Shore Divide Internally. Make sure our team doesn't fall into the same disconnect we're solving for customers. Ensure product, tech, and commercial are aligned.

7. Think Generationally. The average shipowner might be skeptical, but their children entering the business, the young cadets, the tech-savvy crew members - they're our advocates. Build for them.

Personal Commitment

I've spent 30 years in this industry. I've seen it resist change and I've seen it embrace it when the value is clear. I've led digital transformation and I know how hard it is. I've taught the next generation and I know what they expect.

FrontM is my opportunity to bring all of this together - to not just talk about the future of maritime but to build it. To not just analyze the human element problem but to solve it. To not just advise startups but to scale one.

This is about legacy. When I look back, I want to know I was part of making seafaring a dignified, connected, sustainable career for the next generation.

Let's execute.
