Problem & opportunity

Everyone came online. The evenings went quiet.

Everyone’s online. Everyone’s alone.

46%

of seafarers say greater access to communications technology has reduced social interaction onboard.

Connectivity transformed life at sea, but much of the ship’s social life moved into the cabin with it. Mess rooms emptied. Shared downtime became individual screen time.

The result is less connection, more digital fatigue and weaker onboard relationships, on ships where those relationships are the ones people rely on when something goes wrong.

The ship got the bandwidth. It lost the room.

Crew interaction: the highest rated category in the whole Index.

Trust built off-watch is what gets spent on-watch: in emergencies, in toolbox talks, at enclosed-space entries and in the ordinary handovers that keep a vessel running.

The wellbeing numbers are not a morale footnote. They describe the same crew that has to act together under pressure, and they have been moving the wrong way.

Crews want connection. The ship has to create the space for it.

Three forces just converged.

LEO
made it possible.

68,500 commercial vessels now run LEO broadband, which makes bandwidth-efficient live TV viable at scale.

MLC
made it expected.

Since 23 December 2024, MLC 2006 strengthens expectations around recreational facilities and social connectivity onboard.

Crews
proved the demand.

4,000+ vessels already use Loft Multiplex, averaging 72 minutes of communal viewing a day.

Communal viewing at sea used to fail on three counts at once: the bandwidth would not carry it, nobody required it, and no one could prove crews wanted it. All three changed inside two years.

Capability, expectation and demand now point the same way, which is why Rec-Room is worth rebuilding rather than remembering.

The question is no longer whether live TV works at sea. It is whether crew evenings happen together, or alone in cabins.

The Business Case

Less than the cost of a small daily crew expense, shared by the entire ship. The Continuity Solo plan costs less than a cup of coffee a day: for that, the recreation room becomes a daily welfare asset for the whole crew. At Loft Multiplex's optimised consumption rate, 30GB supports roughly 90+ hours of communal viewing a month, bringing the entire crew together for the match, the news or an evening programme. The point is simple: stream once, share it twenty times.

This is not really a TV budget. It is a crew welfare, social connection and onboard culture budget. MLC Regulation 3.1 requires ships to provide appropriate recreational facilities, amenities and services that support seafarers' health and wellbeing, and its accompanying guidance specifically identifies television viewing among recreational facilities to consider where practicable. Loft Multiplex gives that obligation a simple, visible daily expression: people leaving their cabins and spending time together.
